Textiles & Fabrics

Historically, the exquisite, hand-woven silk fabric, dyed in natural colours, was the material for the Royalty and upper classes in India  and  became a highly prized item in the western world when the West discovered the trading routes to the East and thus to its unspoilt riches and resources. Inevitable Industrialization spelt the demise of home-crafted clothes, but even today, some of the best and most intricate designs in Indian fabric still come from the loom of the lonely craftsman.

Silks, synthetics, cotton or woolen, India has made its mark in the Textile market, and this contributes to a sizeable portion of foreign exchange, though comparatively, India is lagging behind some other countries with equal or even less resources.

The centres of Indian  textile industry and market  is distributed mainly at these places: Kanchipuram- the house of Kanjeevaram silk sarees in the South,  Chennai, the outlet for these as well as cotton items, Varanasi/Benares for the famous wedding sarees of that name, Rajasthan for cottons, and Kashmir for Wool items like the famed “Kashmir Shawl”
