One Indian car that made news internationally, and for good reasons, was TATA's Nano, the world's cheapest car that also met the strict Euro stanrdards for safety and emission control in a car. Popularly called now as the "One Lakh" car, Tata group chairman Ratan Tata had to scuttle the production factory at Singur, West Bengal, due to continuing agitation led by the opposition. Later relocated in Gujarat, and in spite of the cost escalation, Ratan Tata has promised to bring out the dream car without an added price-tag.

But India's famous "Ambassador" still lives, still considered "the car best suited to Indian road conditions", though whimpering in a corner of Indian auto industry. Chosen as the Official car of the administrative people, the white Ambassadordumpy vehicles can still be seen parked in hordes outside the parliament house in New Delhi, (it was a similar white one, with all the "official" accessories that was used by the terrorists for the attack on the Parliament on Dec 13, 2001 as an efficient camouflage), Its presence has dwindled to a trickle in the present Indian auto scenario and spotting one on the roads of Indian metros today is game that children can engage in. It has now a "green" - environment friendly - version, fitted with a CNG/LPG engine. Long live the "Ambassador"!

Economic liberalization has brought almost every popular international brand on to Indian roads, and they are vying with each other for a share of the market. "Maruti - Suzuki" has cornered the major portion of it.
